Roy and Janeen's visit

It has been fun hosting (Brother) Roy and Janeen from Kansas. Not ever having been in Nauvoo, they are sponges...trying to do and learn all - in a short few days. We were invited to the Willard Richards home (restored to a beautiful B&B) by innkeeper..our friend Karen Haering. She gave R&J a great tour of the rooms and artifacts, while JoAnn and I set a dinner table...salmon, fresh garden beans and salads. Tomorrow they continue touring. We will go to Carthage. Thanks all who have called and written - we love encouraging family letters!

Vacation

I will be traveling and not bringing a fishing rod.  Wait, that doesn't sound right.  Well, I guess it is, as anywhere I go, I would have to buy a license, and I hate to spend money.  In June I bought a fishing license for $20.50.  Then in July I added a "Three Pole Permit" for $6.50.  Then in August I added a "Trout Permit" for $10.50.  On January 1st I will have to do it all again.  I had better start saving up.  Keep me posted about Fishing in Wichita while I am gone!

Santa Fe Lake

I had my first night fishing experience in Kansas.  Friday evening I was catching 12" channel cats on grasshoppers (no bites on anything else).  I got up at 1:30 am and got to work.  I fished the next 12 hours with everything I could come up with including crayfish and minnows, but never got one bite.  I don't like to get skunked, so I stopped at the bridge that crosses "Dry Creek".  It was full, and the tangle of brush and bramble down to the creek was treacherously muddy and slippery. So I slipped and fell in the creek.  Of course, I stayed and caught bluegill (with grasshoppers).  Santa Fe Lake is a beautiful, well groomed resort.  Don't forget to pay the fee.

Slow day

Thursday was a slow day fishing at North Chisholm.  I saw people trying every lure in their box, and baits from grasshoppers to worms, and sticky bait, cat food, and everything.  Every day is different.  Today I am going to Santa Fe Lake.  Everybody go to the Big Slough Creek at Sedgwick County Park on Saturday morning, 19 September, for a "clean up the creek party" sponsored by the Flatland Fly Fishers http://www.flatlandflyfishers.org/ .

Welcome

I started fishing in Wichita on June 10, 2009.  This is the first time I fish for catfish, bass, crappie, wiper, or saugeye.  I have been a small stream trout fisherman for over 50 years.  Since this is all new to me, I have been studying, and posting what I learn on my website, http://www.cantos.org/fishing .  I know there is much more to learn, so I started this blog, where you can share your experiences fishing in Wichita.
